What a novelty - walking your dog in the rain in the Riverland!
45 enthusiastic dogs and their owners braved the slightly damp weather on Sunday 18th May and joined in the RSPCA fundraiser - "Doggie Day Out". Despite the rain the dogs were all in good spirits and were determined to enjoy themselves. The walk started at the Berri Marina, and followed the Lions walking trail down to Martin's Bend. The dogs didn't seem to mind the rain, and luckily most of their owners were geared up for the wet weather.
On arrival at Martin's Bend we organised a "Good O's" relay for a bit of fun before lunch. We had four teams, each with five dogs. Each dog had to run up to their team bowl with their owner, eat the 4 Good O's and then return to tag the next dog in the team. While several of the teams contained dogs that wouldn't eat the Good O's, the winning team all inhaled the treats and won by a considerable margin. The winning team was made up of predominantly Labradors and Border Collies - any surprise that they won!
The sausage sizzle was certainly appreciated by both the two-legged and four-legged walkers, and then the walkers meandered back along the walking trail to the marina at their leisure. As was to be expected the sun then came out once every body had dispersed and it was a magnificent sunny Riverland afternoon.
The walk raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA, and the mobile phones that we have been collecting on behalf of the RSPCA have raised another $1250.00 so far. We are still taking old mobile phones at the clinic, and also have Million Paws bandanas, Doggie Bags and Cat Sacks for sale to raise additional funds for the RSPCA.
